Location These islands are located at the southern tip of an extensive chain of barrier islands on the Gulf Coast of Florida near Fort Myers. They are twelve and six miles long respectively and lie in a sub-tropical climate zone with 1/3 of Sanibel Island being a Bird Sanctuary. The islands enjoy an average yearly temperature of 82 degrees. A balmy, easterly breeze blows year round except during passage of winter frontal systems. The surrounding waters and tropical foliage make summer temperatures cooler than most of Florida's populous areas. The lush foliage gives the feeling of being on a tropical island without leaving the country. Zoning restrictions prohibiting buildings over four stories tall enhances this.
